it was a really nice day today so i put my plants outside but when i brought them in there were little white bugs jumping off of them. What are they?? Will they harm my plants or anything else for that matter since they are now in my house??? And how do i stop them from getting to my plants??
I have tomato, cucumber, pepper, watermelon, marigolds, asters and daisys if that makes a difference!!
How to get rid of little white bugs on plants???
They could be white flies or aphids. They will suck the moisture out of your plants and kill them. You should spray your plants with your hose to knock off the bugs outside before bringing them inside, or you can put them in your shower to rinse them off. Be careful not to get the soil too wet or the remaining bugs will lay their eggs in the soil and then you'll have more. You can put the pot inside a plastic bag and just hose or shower off the stem and leaves.
Spray them this way every few days if you have to keep them inside. Outdoors, the bugs have predators that will eat them but inside, they'll just keep reproducing.
Spraying your plants indoors with a light soap solution before showering them will help too - just put a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle with water and spray down the leaves and stems, then after 30 - 60 seconds, rinse off those leaves and stems in the shower or with a hose, or if you have a kitchen sprayer on your kitchen sink, you can use that too.
Reply:Been there... done that - white flies - and they suck - the life out of your plants. Get as many off as you can - they are willing to leave if you brush / blow them off. Don't over water as the moist soil is where they lay there egg pods (little fluid filled balls of eggs.) Turn the soil on top from time to time. Treat the plants aggressively with an organic soap - I found "Organocide" from Organic Laboratories Inc. (bought at Lowes) to work best. Make sure that you get the bottom of the leaves also - that's where they love to congregate. They were all over my jalepenos and green peppers - gone now.
