Will putting egg shells around my veggie plants help keep slugs from getting to them?

I found a few slugs on the marigolds that are around my veggie plants and I want to make sure that they don't get any further. Will this work?

I have heard that egg shells work but i have been told that used coffee grounds are better.

I am told the slugs can not cross the coffee.
Reply:ok, well i kinda have the same problem, but put salt around your garden instead with some garden pokers in the front. So if the slugs get past the pokers, then they will curl and die in the salt. Plus make sure that you destroy or kill every slug egg you find.

I have a huge garden with tomatoes, eggplants, strawberries, bell peppers, green onions, cumcumbers, broccoli, and lettuce, and i have to take care, but the salt worked.

Egg shells will most probably work, give it a shot, if nothing works then there are a lot of sites which could help you.
Reply:In my slug infested garden the marigolds are planted specifically to atract slugs then I can pick them. The eggshells barely detered them and only when the shells were dry. If they are not eating your other plants then I wouldn't do much maybe a beer trap or two. Today I finally broke down and invested in non toxic iron phosphate slug granules last week I picked over 100 in a day. Hope this is worth the $13. Good luck !
Reply:Yes, it does help to some degree. When I use them I let them dry and crush them up fine with a mortar %26amp; pestle, then sprinkle them around the flowers I want to protect. It seems to stop a lot of the slugs, since it can cut through their slime and cuts their little bodies.

I haven't seen any help from coffee grounds, but it might work. You can get those for free from Starbucks, they are called "grounds for love" or something.
Reply:Lowe's, (and maybe Home Depot), has a border type of product that is specifically for detouring slugs.

Salt works REALLY well, but once it rains, it's gone and you have to remember to re-salt the earth. I've never tried the eggshells.
Reply:No.

However, the egg shells are excellent for compost building. The are literally "bone meal."
Reply:No,get some DE from the pool supply store. It is ground up sea shells and the slugs can't stand it.I have used it for 20 years and the slugs have moved next door.
Reply:Yes.
