Rabbits and Marigold?

Is it true that people plant Marigold flowers in their vegetable gardens to keep wild rabbits out. If so why do the rabbits stay away from the plant.

Rabbits and Marigold?
Hi,

I'm not sure Marigolds will keep rabbits away, my pet rabbit just loves to eat the flowers.

I think people put "other" plants next to crops, to mask the scents, so by keeping pests away.

If you plant spring onions next to carrots, by thinning them both out together, the scent of the onions will keep away carrot root fly.
Reply:Some gardeners plant marigolds in their vegetable gardens to repel harmful insects. Studies have concluded they are not effective in reducing insect damage on vegetable crops. French types may be useful for root-knot nematode control in soil.

I have planted two marigolds at the heat of a small path behind my home. I really thought the rabbits and deer would chomp them down. However, the small marigold plants are still there...one month later. There is a chemical in the marigolds that repels some insects.

Edit: Chrysanthemums (Mums) also have a similar effect. They contain a chemical that repels insects, also.
Reply:Better fix metal nets along border to keep away wild and stray animals. Marigold flower is proteinaeous food and repells only soil nematodes.
